2014 Broken Hill Carnival Wrap-up
Well the water has definitely settled after another successful 2014 Broken Hill Aquatic Carnival and I thought it was about time I reported on the results of the Broken Hill Aquatic swimmers.
We would like to thank the many volunteers that helped make this carnival the success it was. Year after year you dedicate your time and do everything that is asked of you and more. We would also like to thank the Alma Swimming Club who provided their resources to co-host the event this year and make it the success that it was, thank you to all and give yourselves a big pat on the back. As with all community events it is not possible without our great sponsors and we thank you for your ongoing generous donations, without your support this carnival would not go ahead each year. A final thank you also goes out to those swimmers and clubs that travelled great distances to participate, their support and the competition they provide enhances the development and achievements of our local swimmers.

Broken Hill Aquatic was represented by 19 swimmers with all swimmers putting in an outstanding effort individually and as a team. All swimmers graced the podium which is a fantastic achievement. The team won an incredible number of medals and they should be proud of their achievements.
A special mention must go out to our newly appointed head coach Steven Moore, Steven has done a great job preparing the swimmers for a carnival early in the swimming season and to be able to achieve such great results is fantastic.

Avery and Trinity Connor along with Luke Dawson, competing in their first Broken Hill Carnival, showing that they have made big improvements in their swimming over the winter months. These swimmers all won medals and swam personal best times throughout the weekend. Great effort guys, keep up the good work.
Our oldest swimmer in the team Isabella Morris swam in 8 events and walked away with 8 Gold medals for her efforts. Isabella had a mixed preparation while balancing her HSC studies, work commitments and training in the lead up to the carnival. Just goes to show she still can compete well over the shorter distances.

Younger sister Savannah had a mixed day on Saturday but rebounded well on Sunday to win all her events. Savannah had a sensational swim in her pet event the 100 m Butterfly and finished in a time of 1:10.27 achieving a Blue Standard, Youth Performance Squad Time. The YPS rewards swimmers for achieving particular time standards set by Swimming Australia and this is an outstanding achievement early in the summer swimming season.
The team’s next group of swimmers, Amy Dawson, Lauren Kuerschner, Maddie and Angus Baxter, Will Campbell, Maighan Mashford, Connor Esling, Riley King, Zac Murray, Luca Napoli, Jade Scott and Tobias Thomas all had strong consistent swims. Setting dozens of personal best times and gracing the podium on many occasions. This group of swimmers are our next stars and I look forward to watching them progress in this great sport.

Other notable achievements were by our newly appointed club captains Harry Campbell and Georgie Kuerschner. They competed in 17 and 16 events respectably and won 28 medals between them. Harry won 2 Gold, 8 Silver and 3 Bronze medals and Georgie won 10 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Harry has really ramped up his training and the clubs coaches look forward to some great results from him throughout the season. Georgie swam strongly on both days and she should be very proud of her achievements. As with the other swimmers Georgie is set for big things this season with continued commitment to training.
This season a new award has been introduced to recognise a team member at each carnival that the Stingrays participate. This award is called the President’s Award and is presented by the BHA Stingray’s Club President. The president’s award not only recognises individual results, but also how the winner supports other team members and how they demonstrate the clubs values and participate in fair play.
The first winner of this award was announced during the team dinner following the Broken Hill carnival, with the award being presented to Georgie Kuerschner. Georgie had participated in all her age events & relays which resulted in multiple PB swims and podium finishes. She also claimed a new event record time for her 50m breaststroke swim, a record previously held by former local swimmer Elysia Oldsen, this achievement shows the potential this young lady has for the future. When not swimming she supported & organised the junior members of our team and proudly represented Broken Hill Aquatic during both days of competition.

The Olympic Games are a once every four years opportunity for athletes to compete against the best in the world on a stage like no other, inspiring the next generation of children to 'have a crack' and get involved in swimming. To help clubs capitalise on the increased exposure for swimming during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Swimming Australia and the State Associations have developed the "Dive Right In" campaign. Dive Right In will help clubs offer newcomers the chance to take part in club activities and fully immerse themselves in the club experience.
