- 266 people drowned in Australian waterways between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014.
- This is a reduction of 29 deaths on the 295 recorded in 2012/13 and is the lowest number of drowning deaths recorded in the past 12 years.
- Inland waterways continue to claim the largest number of lives, with 105 drowning deaths in rivers, creeks, lakes and dams around the country.
- Inland waterways accounted for over a third (39%) of all drowning deaths around the country in 2013/14.
- 81% of all drowning deaths in Australia are males, 215 males drowned last year compared to 51 females.
- Despite a spike in 2012/13, there is a reduction in the number of drowning deaths among children under five.
- There were 20 drowning deaths recorded in children under five, the lowest number on record since 1995.
- Swimming pools continue to pose the greatest risk for children under five, accounting for 70% of all drowning deaths in this age group in 2013/14.
- For the first time since 2010, swimming pools have overtaken beaches as the location with the second highest number of drowning deaths, with 39 deaths, compared to 34 at Australian beaches.
- People aged 55 plus accounted for one third (33%) of all drowning deaths in 2013/14, with 87 fatalities recorded.
- There has been a 43% increase the number of young people aged 15 to 24 drowning in Australia, with 40 deaths in 2013/14, compared to 28 in 2012/13.
- Alcohol was known to be involved in 18% of all drowning deaths. Almost half (49%) of those who were known to have consumed alcohol, recorded a blood alcohol reading that was four times the legal limit (0.2mg/L) or higher.

The Olympic Games are a once every four years opportunity for athletes to compete against the best in the world on a stage like no other, inspiring the next generation of children to 'have a crack' and get involved in swimming. To help clubs capitalise on the increased exposure for swimming during the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Swimming Australia and the State Associations have developed the "Dive Right In" campaign. Dive Right In will help clubs offer newcomers the chance to take part in club activities and fully immerse themselves in the club experience.

The 2016 South Australian Country Swimming Championships were held from the
8th to the 11th of January at the Loxton Swimming Pool. This annual event brings together country swimming teams from throughout South Australia and interstate, with 28 teams competing at this year’s championships. 22 South Australian teams and six visiting clubs with 270 competitors nominated in 2,500 swims all competing for the title of country champion.

December was a very busy month for the Broken Hill Aquatic Swimming Club with swimmers attending carnivals in Port Augusta, Mildura and Adelaide. January is shaping up to be the same, with swimmers going to the SA Country Championships in Loxton and the State Championships in Adelaide. Read More

The Broken Hill 2 day swimming carnival was held on the weekend in cool blustery conditions but that did not stop the competitors and spectators enjoying the weekend’s events. Competitors and entries were up on last year’s event with the three local clubs competing and teams making the trip over from Swan Hill, Adelaide, Cobar and the Sunraysia region. Read More

They returned home last week after the four days of competition to celebrate their achievements with their fellow swimmers and supporters. Read More

Last weekend three swimmers from Broken Hill Aquatic made the trip down to Adelaide with their families to compete in the final JX series (junior excellence) and Division 2 meets for the summer season held at the South Australian Aquatic Centre. The meet was scheduled to be held in the 50m (long course)pool, but due to the world water polo championships being held at the same venue the meet was changed to the 25m pool (short course). This gave the swimmers an early start to the short course season. Read More
